Music and Sound
Music is very significant in a film as it sets the scene and evokes strong feelings from the audience depending on the mood of the music. The music is used to enhance the scene and make it flow. In 2017, the music used has changed drastically from just years before.A huge trend is putting contempory rock music onto a sequence which it wouldn't necessarily fit. This effect makes the scene come alive in an exhilarating way. This is different from films from the past as they stuck to the music from the era that they were set in.
This example is from Peaky blinders (2013) set in the 1920s with a backdrop of modern music compared with Goodfellas (Martin Scorsese, 1990) with era appropriate music.
In thrillers music has a huge impact on the tone of the scene. For example: in a scene where it displays the a characters downfall - the music could either be sad to show the extent of the damage or it could be light and happy, this would show a sense of insanity as the scene and music doesn't match.
Many thrillers don't use sound, they use the silence as part of the effect of isolation.
The sounds in many thrillers are sharp and sudden in the background, the films being predominantly lead by dialogue or action. Because of this fact I have to ensure that the dialogue is interesting enough to support the film for the sound part and can lead the film on its own.
Nowadays the audience connects a certain soundtrack to a certain film, when the soundtrack is played it immediately reminds them of the film. Many film soundtracks have reached high in the charts for being so popular. Therefore it is essential to have an interesting and exciting soundtrack.
We realise that most films incorporate their own soundtrack but as we are under time pressure this would not be ideal at the minute. Because of this we plan to get music from websites, as there is copyrights against taking music from the internet we have chosen tracks from the websites that are free from the copyrights act to avoid this obstacle.
These websites are:
Freeplaymusic.com
Freemusicarchive.org
Proudmusiclibrary.com
In the film which I am creating this year, I would like it to have an essence of professionalism about it - instead of looking like an amateur film. After research I have found out that sound takes a huge effect on the quality of the film. Most amateur films being described as 'thin' and lacking aural depth.
This could be because the film maker has decided to not include Foley sound effects into the soundtrack of the film.
Foley sound effects is the reproduction of everyday sounds that are added to a film in the post-production stage to enhance audio quality. These reproduced sounds can be anything from the crumpling of paper and footsteps to squeaky doors and the running of water.
These sounds are recorded separately and added into the film later.

Another sound technique that I wish to add into the film is filming the blank space sound. This could be classed as a necessity, as it is useful to always have blank space to add into a scene if the sound filmed doesn't quite fit right.
